Fur Free Pledge

Cruelty to animals is not fashionable.

Almost all fur in Australia is imported from Europe, Asia and the US, where the animals are either captured wild in painful traps or locked in tiny cages on fur factory farms.  Animals captured in the wild by steel jaw leg traps can suffer in pain for up to a week (or an average of 15 hours) before dying or being put to death by a trapper.

Some of these wild animals are so bloody and mangled that they can't even be used (this is called 'wastage') or the poor, desperate animal chews off it's own leg in an attempt to escape (called 'wring off'). Inevitably, animals not targeted also become trapped and killed, including people's pet dog and cats as well as endangered animals.

Also, to preserve their "valuable pelts" animals (both wild and farm bred) are put to death by anal or vaginal electrocution, drowning, being gassed, poisoned, beaten or, worst of all, skinned alive.

In Asia, millions of cats and dogs are killed for their fur and even though it is illegal to import cat or dog fur to Australia, some of these furs are intentionally mislabelled as rabbit, fox or mink (or even faux fur) before being imported into countries like Australia and The US.

ANIMALS NEED THEIR FUR MORE THAN PEOPLE DO.

Buying leather makes it possible for factory farms, which inflict cruelty to animals on a massive scale, to stay in business.

An undercover investigation by PETA revealed cows forced to march hundreds of miles, with workers sometimes rubbing chili or salt in their eyes and breaking their tails to keep them moving. Surprisingly, this was in India - the country that considers cows 'Holy.'

In addition to the cruelty, the fumes from chemicals used in leather production are the most toxic of any industry. Death is not uncommon. The chemicals also cause severe itching, rashes, skin disease and cancer. Many of these low income countries rely on these jobs, in which safety gear and protective gloves and footwear are not enforced or available in some cases. These chemicals also wreak havoc on the environment.

So long as there is demand for hide, these dangerous working conditions will continue to claim lives and damage the environment.

 Take a stand!
